Just some thoughts

2014 – The Year of Promotion

I like taking pictures.  Scratch that, I LOVE taking pictures.  I love walking around and using a different eye to try and capture something most people wouldn’t think of or notice.  I love the editing process and coming up with a final image.  I love uploading the images to the various social networking sites (FaceBook, Twitter, Flickr, here at my own site) and releasing the images for all to see.  I love the responses that I get.   I don’t love self-promotion.  I’m not good at PR or marketing for myself.  I put the images out there and let them live a life all their own.  Here is my problem – I put the images out there but don’t give them aid or support so that they can flourish and live a life all their own.  I’m the parent birds and all my images are wee little birdies fresh from the eggs.  Instead of helping them learn to fly I watch them hatch and then chirp ‘you’re on your own now… peace out!’  I don’t get my name out there.  I don’t try to get noticed.  I haven’t been seeking out art shows to be a part of.  Hell, I haven’t been typing in here.  I don’t know what to do or how to say things and until I start to put myself out there people won’t know I or my images exist.   I am labeling 2014 the year of promotion.  While it is March already there has been some progress made – albeit mostly talk.  I redesigned the website to make it more visually pleasing, another photographer and I... read more

Artomatic opening

My space is completed, cleaned up, and ready for viewers.   Artomatic is an opportunity for local DC artists to showcase their work in a mass collection of other artists.  While not a permanent dedicated space year to year, the organization finds buildings that are either under construction but not ready to be occupied or, in the case this year, they have a building that is slated to be torn down.  These buildings become infested with hundreds of artists looking for another opportunity to put their hard work on display and show their creative sides.   This year we have 11 floors and about 1,200 artists filling the spaces, included in all that chaos is a space for me.  The last time I participated in Artomatic I explored the theme of desires.  Half of my wall was dedicated to pastries and baked goods that I shot at Grounded.  These images carried the viewer from the beginning steps of the baking process through to the final product – a mouthwatering treat.   The second half of my wall contained some of my nude figurative works.  Some delicate B&W photos to play off the very colorful desserts.     This year I couldn’t resist splitting up my space yet again.  Instead of more desserts and more nudes, I decided to go with a more whimsical and playful tone and display.  Half of the space is set-up to showcase images from the project I tackled last year, my Odd-Day-T photos.  The other half of the wall is perfect for letting people experience the Even Steven project that is ongoing.   Because these images... read more

Work in progress

With Artomatic just around the corner, I spent Sunday preparing my wall.  As you can see I have the black borders painted and have outlined the two areas I will be using.  Each space is a 5’x7′ area and the stripe down the center is 2′.  I will be using the stripe to hang the information about the images, contact info, my name, all that jazz   The left half of the wall will be for my Odd-Day-T photos.  Before I can hang those images I need to apply the ‘cork’ background.  I have all the images chosen and printed.  Once the ‘cork’ has been installed then I can hang the images.   The right side of the wall will contain the Even Steven images.  I have a lot more to do on this side versus the left.  For starters, I need to choose the Steven pictures I want to use.  I have gone through and narrowed down the selection to 41, however, I was only planning on using 24 images.  The selection process for Steven is a lot harder than it was for the Odd-Day-T.  Because the Steven project is still ongoing I can’t just limit myself to 2 images from each month, as I did with Odd-Day, so it is a bit of a struggle.   My titling and general information still needs to be typed up and framed.  MY cards are on order and will hopefully arrive shortly. So much to do and so little time to do it in.  Everything has to be installed and ready to go on Sunday May 13.  I think... read more
